Cheap, good pictures but not really made for digital...Strengths: Cheap, compact, light-weight Weakness: Starts at 28mm (film SLR equivalent), severly limiting flexibility with D-SLR use. This lens is not designed for digital SLR use - try the 18-55 (or any other 18 to something) for a much better fit. 28mm translate to 42mm in film equivalent, in other words the zoom range is normal to tele only. Unfortunately Costco has bundled this fairly useless lens with the D50 camera. Once you buy a real lens (i.e. the Nikon 18-200) you can use this one as paper-weight.

OK for a starterStrengths: Well, it's lightweight, fast zoom and focus response, and, well, it zooms a little. Weakness: Minimum range of 28 makes it severely limited for landscapes, or even taking a pic of your own house. You have to stand back like 50 feet to get the entire shot in. Look for one that starts with 18mm This is merely designed to allow you to use your camera right out of the box. It is limited both in wide and zoom settings, seeing as it goes from way up at 28m to only 80mm. Again, it's meant as a starter, not as a keeper. Advertisement

This lens was designed to be a starter lens on lower end film bodies, but it works fine on digital bodies too. You might be better of going with the 18-55 if you are a digital user (has higher contrast and has wider angle). If you believe that Nikon full frame advent has begun, stick with this lens.
