Strengths: Image quality--sharp, decent color saturation, 2.8 full-range aperture; solid build quality; 62mm filters.

Weakness: push zoom, it's also counterintuitive: widens as you push away from camera. Weight. Focus ring spins and it's close to the zoom.

This is an older Nikkor lens, but it's been a long-time, dependable staple in Nikon's standard zooms. It's sharp, focuses fast enough, delivers great bokeh and color. It was replaced by the 28-70mm, with which I have no experience. But unless the new version is a stellar lens, I think the money saved on the earlier model makes it hard to pass by. It was replaced by the 28-70mm, with which I have no experience. But unless the new version is a stellar lens, I think the money saved on the earlier model makes it hard to pass by. I should add, though, that this full-frame lens is not quite wide enough for Nikon's 3/4 digital sensors, which is a strong point in favor of the its replacement.
I gave it 4 stars because I think the lens is a bit dated and I'm not crazy about the zoom mechanism. I'm also sure that Nikon's higher cost lenses have more contrast and color saturation. Nevertheless, this is the lens that stays on my D200 all of the time, and I've never worried about capyuring high quality images.
