Great student, starter camera

Strengths: Size, cost, ability to change exposure modes via an actual knob. Supports raw files.

Weakness: Slow focus, nested menus & controls, slow operating system

As far as this economy camera, it is very good for what it represents. I wouldn't shoot with it profesionally, but to be able to by a DLSR for under $500 is just amazing. (I bought a Nikon D100 for $2k in July '02.) It is a little slow on the focusing. It is also a little frustrating on the menu system...mainly that when you go to hit enter, it drops you out of some menus, and accepts in other menus. On the menus that it drops you out of, you are supposed to hit the cursor key right...not "ok". Also, becareful in hitting the delete key twice while in playback mode...you could end up deleting all of your images.

Thge lcd screen is very bright an sharp. I like Pentax including the depth of field preview on such a low end camera. The AF overide is a nice touch also, so that even when on AF, you can adjust the focus easily. The included kit lens, although not technically evaluated for this review...and not tested scientifically, I am impressed with it's build and performance.

One of my favorite things about this camera is that every lens we have for the Pentax K1000s, Zx-ms, etc. all work with this camera also.

Also, I like how you can change exposure modes very quickly with teh turn of a dial...something you can't even do with my D200 or D2h.

Weakness: N/A for me, though limited lens options compared with Nikon or Canon.

If you are looking for a DSLR for under $500 bucks this is the camera to get. Battery life is great, pictures clear, the 11-point AF is a godsend for these cameras, and the fact that it uses AA batteries and SD cards is also great.

Great Camera

Strengths: Easy to use. Very light so easy to carry around.

This is a great camera if you're looking for something to start off your photography hobby with. I love using this camera because it's easy to use and easy to handle.
